BJÖRKBERG GRAND MARAIS
Björkberg is an architecturally distinguished enclave in Grand Marais that brings together the amenities of a destination retreat with the simple pleasures of a small-town lifestyle, all within walking distance to Grand Marais’ charming downtown waterfront.

Each architecturally-distinguished unit at Björkberg is designed to celebrate the region’s Nordic heritage and Northern landscape. Björkberg’s signature color palette references the fishing shacks and summer cottages of Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Double gables paired with white trim and large windows offer a playful take on iconic Nordic forms. Birch Mountain, Björkberg’s namesake and location, offers privacy and seclusion and also affords a view of Grand Marais Harbor and Artist’s Point. It is located just a stone’s throw from North House Folk School, The Angry Trout, Fisherman’s Daughter, Grand Marais Art Colony, and downtown. Björkberg takes advantage of its rugged surroundings with terraced house sites set amongst exposed rock and native landscaping. ~Benjamin Olsen*, AIA Award Winning Designer

The homes at Björkberg “turn their head” toward Grand Marais Harbor and Artist’s Point, capturing remarkable long views to Lake Superior from their rugged site at the edge of town. Kitchen, living, dining, screen porch, and primary suite spaces face Lake Superior at the front of each home, while the private rear of each house hosts bedroom, bathroom, and sauna amenities. ~Designer

Björkberg offers a playful take on iconic Nordic forms. Each building is articulated as a twin gable, rendered in a bi-color palette that draws from the fishing shacks and summer cottages of Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.

An open-concept main level co-locates Kitchen, Dining, and Living spaces around a wood stove focal point. The dedicated dining space is oriented toward a generous corner window and the living space has a walk-out balcony (or terrace).
The kitchen is the architectural and social center of the home. It occupies a key position at the “knuckle” of the floor plan, allowing it to serve the dining and living room and separate “front of house” from the private zones at the rear. Designed to be compact yet hardworking, the kitchen combines generous counter space, smart storage, highline appliances, and an eat-in island.
Each home comes equipped with 3 comfortable bedrooms, one on the living level and two upstairs. The two rear bedrooms enjoy the privacy and seclusion of the back of the house, set away from the living areas by a modest vestibule that provides modesty and separation. These rear bedrooms are adjacent to modest bathrooms that can have either a shower, tub, or combination. The primary suite at the front of the home occupies pride of place looking out to Artist Point. Each suite has a generous bathroom, closet, sitting area, and sleeping space. Each suite also has a private front-facing balcony.
Lighting. The high latitude and naturalized landscape at Björkberg supports remarkable views of the Northern sky, including the Milky Way and Aurora Borealis. Landscape lighting at Björkberg will maintain low light levels and not contribute to lighting pollution in accordance with Cook County’s designation as a dark sky area.
Spaces. Spatial variety was a key design driver of Björkberg Grand Marais. Each level features a rich mix of spaces - social/private, transitional/occupiable, light/dim, open/closed, up/down, and indoor/outdoor. The architectural design orchestrates these contrasts into a spatial experience, enlivening the daily routine of the home.
